Projects or Spaces: do you need both?

ChatGPT - 有了Project,还需要 Space 吗?
TL;DR
  • The difference between Projects and Spaces isn’t whether you can save materials or collaborate with others—it’s the entry point for work: a Project centers on Chat, a Space centers on outputs like Pages.
  • It’s not “Projects for individuals, Spaces for teams.” Projects suit shared context and exploring and moving work forward; Spaces suit several people editing the same document, leaving comments, and having AI revise paragraphs.
  • If you already use Projects, there’s no need to migrate: try Page when several people often need to edit the same output, consider Space when you need to manage multiple Pages, and let your real workflow decide whether to use either.

I only recently sat down and properly opened ChatGPT’s new Space.

Page is like the old Canvas, and Space is a bit like Notion. But I had a question: Project can already save materials, reuse context, and support collaboration, so why do we need Space?

01 | What is Space?

A Page is a document you can edit together with AI: revise paragraphs, add tables, leave comments, or ask ChatGPT to help with edits. A Space organizes multiple Pages, files, and subpages, and you can share a single Page or the whole space.

Both it and Project can save materials and be shared with others. That’s not where the difference lies.

02 | How do you tell Project and Space apart?

The easiest way to understand the difference:

Project uses Chat as its main entry point for work. You put conversations, files, and Instructions in one place so the AI can draw on shared context to keep researching, discussing, and moving the work forward. A Shared Project also lets multiple people view it and branch off into their own discussions.

Space uses outputs like Pages as its main object of work. Everyone can edit the same document, comment on specific paragraphs, and have AI revise based on what’s currently there.

So it’s not “Project for individuals, Space for teams,” and it’s not “Project is where you think, Space is the only place to save outputs.” The two overlap quite a bit; they just emphasize different things.

03 | An example: a product launch

Three people are getting ready to launch a new product.

In a Project, the PM, designer, and engineer share context, and each uses AI to research requirements, explore solutions, and discuss technical risks.

In a Space, the team jointly maintains the PRD, the launch plan, and external copy. A marketing colleague questions a sentence in the product description; the PM checks it right next to the original text, leaves a comment, and then asks AI to revise that paragraph.

The former is suited to exploring and pushing work forward; the latter to collaborating around a single output.

04 | Already using Projects—should you migrate?

My take: no need.

If you’re mainly having long-running discussions with AI on your own and moving projects forward, Project already works well.

If you often need several people to edit and comment on the same output, try Page. If you need to manage multiple Pages, then consider Space.

If Project + Google Docs / Notion / GitHub is already running smoothly, there’s no reason to move.

Space is worth watching, because it lets AI not just take part in the discussion but also help maintain the outputs together. But whether it’s more efficient should be decided by your real workflow, not by the name of a new feature.
